Needlework Circle History
The predecessor of today’s Needlework Circle was a sewing circle of seven members begun in the early 1860’s. Like those first members, today’s circle (revised since 1997) members use their skills to fashion needlework items for various mission projects. To date, its members and friends of members have used their skills to fashion needlework hats, scarves, lap-robes, prayer shawls, purses, blankets, wash cloths, pillow cases, tote bags, “preemie caps” and other handmade items for local nursing homes, hospitals, The Salvation Army, The Help Center, The American Cancer Society, The Presbyterian Home for Children and the Alabama-Mississippi Women’s Conference. This industrious group and church members at large also fill stockings for distribution by The Salvation Army to needy children at Christmas.
In addition, Needlework Circle has designed and constructed various needlepoint tapestries, chair seats and setee backs, angel and cross ornaments. This group also designed and handcrafted a quilt, wall tapestry for the children’s wing and made special cloth napkins for the Presbyterian Women’s annual luncheon.
We in First Presbyterian Needlework Circle have been blessed with a legacy that we continue to the present. We take comfort in the prayers of our ancestors as we continue our work into future missions. We welcome all Presbyterian Women and young girls who are interested in mission through needlework as well as those who want fellowship and Bible study every other Sunday during the school calendar year.
